Kindergarten - "Just Right Research"
Students are working on researching animals native to Georgia. They were introduced to this website and were able to explore using the trackpad, tabs, and links. They were encouraged to read what they were able to read on their own. Next week, they will be researching an animal specific to their class.
First Grade
Just as learning to play the piano, or soccer, takes practice, so does keyboarding. And, learning how to use the keyboard, is an important foundation for learning to write and edit. Students used "Dance Mat Typing" to practice skills but also learned that good typing involves good posture, finger placement, and going SLOW. We used this program periodically throughout the year to reinforce these skills. If your child is interested in working on this outside of school, please be sure to supervise their posture and finger placement.
Second Grade
In much the same way as non-fiction books are designed, students used Microsoft Word's "publishing layout" to insert clip art with captions. Once our pictures were re-sized from the corners, we inserted a "text box" to create the caption. We practiced "drag and drop" to move the elements around the page. Many students really enjoyed this very practical activity and may ask to practice at home. Some even started to create their very own books.
Third Grade
Teaching students to work with digital photographs is really like teaching them a life skill. It is something that students, and adults, use regularly for personal, school, and professional purposes. In order to have photographs to work with on our computers in the Media Center, students used Photobooth to create wacky pictures using the special effects features. This is one of the loudest, and fun, lessons students do in the Media Center. Photobooth is an Apple-based product and comes with Apple computers. Next week, we will be inserting the photos into documents.
