Kindergarten - Students were introduced to a kindergarten-friendly keyboarding program called, Key Seeker. They learned that there are two sides to the keyboard - one for each "monkey paw." The left "monkey paw" or hand is the purple side and the right "monkey paw" or hand is the green side. Students may be practicing this in their classrooms and can also practice at home. For some students, I used a washable marker to put a purple and green dot on their hands; some students liked this and found it helpful.
First Grade - Students were also introduced to a keyboarding program called "Dance Mat Typing." We started with Level One and practiced placing our fingers on the "home row" keys. Students learned that every finger is responsible for typing certain letters but that the fingers always rest on the home row keys. Students may have time to work on this in class but are also encouraged to practice at home.
Second Grade - Second grade has been working on keyboarding and research. Keyboarding skills are increasingly developed in second grade and will continue into third. Some classes are using their keyboarding skills in the classroom. Classes are also doing online research using both WorkBook Junior Online and PebbleGo. Both of these resources can be accessed from our school's website. Your student can tell you the logins.
Third Grade - We are continuing to learn about responsible use of the Internet and technology. In this week's lesson, we explored the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus website. With authentic text and pictures, many students initially believed the site to be real. However, upon further inspection, and especially the photographs, they realized it was fake. It was created to teach students about using critical reading and thinking skills when evaluating websites. The site can be found here.
