To continue our celebration of Black History Month, all classes learned about the genre of historical fiction with the book, "Ruth and the Green Book" by Calvin Alexander Ramsey with Gwen Strauss. They learned about what it was like for an African American family to travel from Chicago to Alabama in the 1950's. " The Negro Travelers' Green Book" made it easier with lists of places to eat, get gas, sleep and even get a haircut in the segregated south. The book was so engaging that even our squirmy kindergarteners were sitting quietly and engaged in the story. It was also a good example of the design principle "Empathy and Caring" and "Service and Compassion."
