Personal Review: I always thought of American Girl as being about buying dolls. Most of what I had heard about, and read, was the obscene cost of the dolls. The magazine, however, is an appropriately substantive magazine for girls in about second through sixth grade. There are interesting articles, history lessons, and tips on healthy lifestyle choices. For the cost of the subscription, it is worth having in the Media Center.

Standards:
Although it does have articles about history and historic events, we do not subscribe for this reason. It is purely for entertainment.
Selection rationale: This magazine has been in publication since 1992. We have it in our Media Center for children to read when they are not able to check out books with their class or come in at other times. It is marketed specifically to girls but is a very respectable, appealing option. The girls in my school enjoy reading it. We also have a number of the American Girl books which are held in high regard by respected professional library journals.
