In the Media Center - Week of February 27th

All students are viewing the short movie - Safety Smart Online.  It is a Disney-based video about safe and smart use of the Internet and technology.  I don't usually show movies during library time but this is very well-done, entertaining and relatable on an important subject.  It's a great way to introduce the concept of "digital citizenship."

I hope this video can start some discussions between you and your child around this topic.  You can find a link to a summary of the video here which might be a nice way to start a dialog.  Also think about your own use of technology, so that you can be a good role model for your child.  And remember, most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years old to have their own account.

Some of the topics covered include:

1. Don't share personal information online including your name, address, phone number or picture.

2. Take a break from the screen and enjoy the outdoors, and real interactions with people.

3. What you put out on the Internet stays there forever including game scores.

4. Don't discuss other people, share photos, or videos of them that would hurt their feelings or embarrass them.

5. If you see something on the Internet that makes you uncomfortable, please tell a parent immediately.

If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by or email me at izeff@csdecatur.net.
