Kindergarten and First Grade
In honor of Black History Month this February, students will learn about African American inventor, Garrett Morgan. He is credited with inventing the traffic light, zig zag sewing machine pattern and gas mask, as well as other inventions. You can check out his biography in PebbleGo. Students will also have their picture taken with a giant traffic light.
Second and Third Grade
I met this author at the Decatur Book Festival several years ago and was fascinated by the story. Students will listen to the book and also see two actual copies(reproductions) of the "Negro Travelers' Green Book. These books were used by African-Americans traveling through the United States to find friendly restaurants, gas stations, and accommodations. We will also view the New York Public Library's online version from 1937.
