At Winnona Park, we have a flexible library program. Classes do have a regularly scheduled time each week, however, our library is open throughout the day for students to return, and check out books. As our library is also used for visitors and special programs, and classes regularly go on field trips, sometimes classes have to be moved around, or even canceled depending on how hectic the week is. To further complicate things, I will plan activities for each grade level, although sometimes the activity varies from class to class within a grade, depending on what the teacher is doing in the classroom, and what we might plan together. So, sometimes it's hard to do a simple summary of the week, and so far, many weeks of this school year have been an example of this.
Kindergarten - all kindergarten classes did do the same activity this week. We are working on a drawing of our house using KidPix. Students draw their house, and then add their address number, and name using the keyboard. The drawings will be added to their "All About Me" books.
First Grade - all first graders(except Ms. Blackmon's class who will come next week), used Google Earth to first look at the continents which is their current unit of study(except Ms. Tavel who is doing weather first). After exploring continents, I quickly learned that first graders really just wanted to see their houses. We found our school, houses, and one student even saw his mother and baby sister out on the sidewalk. I explained to the students that Google Earth was free, and a good use of their screen time at home.
Second Grade - For classes not reading or discussing "The One and Only Ivan" as a class, I read the picture book, "Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla." Some classes also watched this short video clip about Ivan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYYL2LxotA8.
Mr. Reading's class had already read, and discussed the book as part of their non-fiction unit, so we were able to use Voicethread to start a conversation about Martin Luther King - https://voicethread.com/share/8316269/.
Third Grade - For classes not reading or discussing "The One and Only Ivan" as a class, I read the picture book, "Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla." Some classes also watched this short video clip about Ivan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYYL2LxotA8. Students also had the opportunity to nominate a book character to fill the role of President and Vice-President of the library. I will take their nominations and create a ballot; the entire school will be voting the week of the Presidential election. Stay tuned to hear about our highly qualified candidates. For those students who had time, they were also able to use Typing Club.
