Winnona Park is "On the Same Page"
This year's "On the Same Page" selection illustrates the design principal of "diversity and inclusion" in a beautifully written memoir presented in graphic novel format. You can read more about this program here on their website; it's now in its fourth year. In the book, the author writes about loosing her hearing at age four from meningitis and how she deals with her successes and failures with friendships, schoolwork and her disability. Kindergarten and first graders were introduced to the book but also read the picture book below about a deaf character which included learning some sign language. If your kindergarten or first grader is interested, you could read it together as a read aloud. For second and third graders, we read the first chapter of the digital version of the book while it was displayed on the Activboard. Second and third graders all have a copy in their classroom, we have library copies, and it is available for purchase at Little Shop of Stories. It is a 2.7 AR reading level so it will be accessible to many of our students.
