Kindergarten and First Grade
One of our favorite books from last school year was, "The Day the Crayons Quit." When I saw the second book at Little Shop of Stories, I bought it immediately and could not wait to share it with the students. It did not disappoint. I also learned that Universal Pictures has bought the rights to the movie version so stay tuned. Be sure to ask your child about yellow and orange crayon, peach crayon and the creative endings to both books.
NEWS FLASH: On Saturday, September 5th, Drew Daywalt will lead a crayon parade from the Community Bandstand on the Square to the new Children's Stage at the Rec Center. Dress as your favorite crayon and join the fun. And if that's not enough, the following day, Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss-Glasser, co-creators of the Fancy Nancy series will lead a parade along the same route for those wishing to dress "fancy."
Second and Third Grade
Students were introduced to Destiny, our library catalog system. They learned that the catalog system is how libraries keep track of the books in materials in the library; that the information provided on the spine of the book is called the call number; and how the fiction and picture books are shelved in alphabetical order. I also explained that school and public libraries are all organized in about the same way so that if you learn to use one library, you can use many libraries. Over the next few weeks we will be searching on our own and practicing finding books on the shelves.
