Kindergarten and First Grade
We read the Dr. Seuss' latest book(published at the end of July) - "What Pet Should I Get?" which is all about making choices and decisions. Although Dr. Seuss died in 1991, this book was discovered by his wife and recently published. You can read more about the book here in a recent New York Times article. Although we have this book in the library, I used the digital version to read on the Activboard. Students also had to make their own decision by selecting, and checking out their first book - kindergarten to the classroom and first graders to take home - if they choose.
Second and Third Grade
Before checking out their first books, students took the Accelerated Reader(AR) STAR reading test which provides a reading range that is another tool used to help students pick out "just right" books. Many teachers use the reading range as a tool and some teachers also use the quizes available in AR to gauge comprehension and to set reading goals. The AR Bookfinder website is a great tool for parents as it provides reading level information for books you may have at home, or those you get from the public library.
