At first he refuses to get back on the wall but eventually overcomes his fear to save the day - or in this case, the horse. He also never climbs again without the proper safety equipment.
Comments: This book is my kind of humor and evidently, the same humor had by early elementary school students as the students at my school loved this book. It is a great example of the concepts of success and failure.
Extensions:
1. After reading the traditional Mother Goose rhymes of Humpty Dumpty, Hey Diddle Diddle, and Little Miss Muffet, explain the origin of fable and fairy tales. Also explain the many references to these classics in literature. This book about Humpty Dumpty is a perfect example.
2. After doing the above, read the Humpty Dumpty book and have the students identify references to other sources, such as Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Make a list of these.
3. Slightly older students - second and third grade - could do some guided research to learn about the history of some of the more famous nursery rhymes.
