Plot Summary: This book has it all - poems, pictures and facts. Each "specimen" includes a poem with hints about the animal, a photograph of a hidden animal, a photograph showing the actual location of the hidden animal - some are tricky, and some interesting facts about the animal. The layout includes fold out pages.
Comments: This is a clever book that will appeal to both readers and non-readers. It would also be a good book for a parent or grown-up read aloud. Non-readers will enjoy studying the hidden animals. The poems make it a tangible way to teach, and give examples of, different forms of poetry.
Extensions:
1. A great book for introducing poetry. Students could write their own poetry involving their favorite animal or pet.
2. Students would draw a picture with something "hidden" inside. They could share their drawings with the class and see who was able to find what. These would be nice to display in the Media Center and as a way to highlight this book.
3. Starting with photographs either taken by the teacher or taken from a magazine, students will create drawings to "hide" in the photograph. The photographs should includes patterns that occupy the entire space.
