Selection rationale: This book is at least four years newer than similar books in our collection. It is at a reading level that is reasonable for at least some third grade students(ATOS 3.2.) It also has a table of contents and index which can be used to introduce students to these aspects of reference materials. The author is a former elementary school teacher.

I've found former teachers as authors usually fall into two distinct camps - 1. They know how children think & learn and write accordingly, 2. They can't avoid being pedantic and their writing sounds like a boring lecture.
